Connecting Position Tracking with Google Analytics

Connecting Position Tracking with Google Analytics

Position Tracking can import keywords directly from Google Analytics into a Position Tracking campaign so you can track improvements for keywords you want to improve rankings for.

Position Tracking is one of our most popular tools in the Projects section. It allows you to track daily keyword rankings on any device in any location around the world. This tool can provide you with organic or paid keyword data. Campaigns can be centered around a domain and up to 20 competing domains.

For each added competitor, you can measure visibility %, estimated traffic and average position for all of the target keywords. By importing keywords directly from your Google Analytics, you can ensure that Semrush is gathering data on every single keyword that your website is ranking for on Google.

How to set up Google Analytics and Position Tracking

When you first create your Position Tracking project, you will be given the option to add keywords you wish to analyze. You are given five options to provide keywords:

  • Manually
  • From another campaign
  • From Semrush reports
  • From a TXT or CSV file
  • Importing from Google Analytics

During the set-up process, you can connect Google Analytics to your tracking campaign on the second step of the configuration (Keywords). To initiate the connection, you need to select “Google Analytics” from the Import drop-down in the Position Tracking Settings window. Then click on “Connect Google Analytics account.” It will generate a pop-up where you can grant access to your Google Analytics account.

After connecting your account, you will be able to select the Source of data and if you want to add organic or paid keywords to your campaign.

Once you make your selection, press the Import button to reveal the keywords.

Importing keywords directly from Google Analytics allows you to skip the guesswork and seamlessly track the keywords that your website is already ranking for.

If you have already created your campaign, there are a few other ways to this screen. You can find it by clicking Keywords in the header of your project:

How to Remove Google Analytics From Your Position Tracking Project

You can remove the Google Analytics connection by revoking third party access to Position Tracking in your Google account’s security settings.

To remove Google Analytics without leaving Position Tracking, navigate to the Edit Keywords window through the gear button as described above. Then, click the “Import From” button, find the Google Analytics option and select “Disconnect GA” under the Source drop-down.
